Alan R. Freeman, PhD, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, in his Cumru Township home. Born in Atlantic City, NJ, he was the son of the late Morris and Sophie (Gulkin) Freeman.
His education included a Bachelor of Science degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1958, a PhD in Pharmacology from Hahnemann Medical College in 1962, and five additional years of post-doctoral training at Columbia University in New York City.
Alan’s subsequent academic career included appointments at Rutgers University, Indiana University, and Temple University Medical School, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Physiology from 1972 until his retirement in 1986. He was awarded multiple NIH research grants and authored numerous scientific articles. Temple University medical students also honored him with their Golden Apple Award for outstanding teaching.
Alan’s personal interests included electronic design, photography and 4-wheeling in the American Southwest. He is survived by his loving and beloved wife of 46 years, Margaret (Bechtold) Freeman.
