Douglas R. (Dick) Wieder, 88, of Montrose Manor, entered into his eternal home on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 in the Reading Hospital following an extended illness. He was predeceased by his loving wife Bonnie L. (Wagenblast) Wieder, with whom he celebrated 69 years of marriage. Born in West Reading, he was the son of the late Russell H. Wieder and Helen R. (Boyer) Wieder. He was a 1953 graduate of Shillington High School and faithful member of Alsace Lutheran Church, Muhlenberg Township, serving over the years as Treasurer, Church Councilman and Adult Sunday School teacher.
After becoming a standout on his Shillington High and American Legion baseball teams, Dick was recruited to play with the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League team in Dothan, Alabama. On returning home, he was employed by the former Federal Paperboard Co., and Reading Paperboard Co., Spring Township, for over 45 years, retiring in 2000 as Office Manager.
His love of sports led him to coach youth basketball and baseball. Dick was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, never missing a Phillies, Eagles or Sixers game. He enjoyed playing basketball, softball and golf with his buddies over the years and spending his lunch hour at the papermill, jogging along the “Tully”. During many family and friend gatherings, he often became the comedian of the party and enjoyed making the people he loved laugh, all in good fun.
Above all, Dick loved his Lord and Savior and rarely missed an opportunity to share the Word and Joy of the Lord with the people he came in contact with, whether family, friend or stranger.
He is survived by his daughters – Debra L. Brendel, wife of David C. Brendel, Cumru Township and Patricia A. Swanger, wife of Jeffrey W. Swanger, Mohnton, his grandchildren – Stephanie L. Swanger, Mohnton and Christian D. Brendel, Washington, DC as well as many adoring nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy J. Gensemer and brother-in-law Paul J. Gensemer Sr., Shillington.
Graveside services in Forest Hills Memorial Park will be private at the convenience of the family. The Klee Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Shillington, is assisting the Wieder family. www.kleefuneralhome.com
