Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Smoker, 91, of Cumru Township formerly of Monocacy, passed to the next dimension of her life on May 22, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Born in Pottstown, she was a daughter of the late Norman H. and Carrie E. (Flickinger) Focht. Betty was the wife of J. Richard Smoker, with whom she shared 67 wonderful years of marriage.
A graduate of Pottstown High School, she was employed by Bell Telephone as an operator and supervisor. She was also a pre-school teacher at the Birdsboro Christian Pre-School, and an employee of the former Sears store at the Coventry Mall. An active member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, she sang in the choir, taught pre-school children in Faith Formation, and for many years supervised Immanuel’s mission to Outlook. Betty also served on Immanuel’s Diversity Committee and the Prayer network. Her many interests included crafting, traveling, cooking and enjoying her beloved family.
She is survived by her husband – J. Richard, her son – Keith Robert Smoker husband of Jeanie, Gibraltar, her daughter – Beth Marie wife of Mark Lerario, Flying Hills, her 3 grandchildren – Christian James Smoker husband of Kera Palm, Reading, Elise Marie Lerario wife of Jamie Wagner, Schuylkill Haven, and Paul Anthony Lerario, Reading. Also surviving is her great granddaughter Kaliel.
Betty will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and devotion to her loved ones.
A Celebration of Betty’s life will held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, 11:00 AM at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 99, S. Waverly St., Shillington, PA 19607. Rev. Jayme Babczak and Rev. Megan Huesgen will officiate. Interment in Highland Memorial Park, Pottstown, will be private. The family will receive family and friends immediately following services in fellowship hall. Betty loved flowers, please honor her memory with either flowers or contributions to Immanuel UCC at the above address.
