Jean A. McConnell, 80, of Reading, formerly of the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, passed away November 7, 2023, at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, Narvon, where she was a guest since September 20th.
Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Harry J. Allen and Elizabeth (Lindsay) Allen-Wurst.
Jean was a graduate of Northeast High School, Jefferson Nursing School, and Penn State University. She was a registered nurse in several locations over her long career: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, St. Christopher’s, the Medical College of Pennsylvania; she served as head nurse for the Intensive Care Unit at Rolling Hills Hospital and retired from serving in the ER of Temple University Hospital. After retirement, she volunteered in a community clinic in the Mount Airy-Germantown area.
Jean was an active member of the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, singing alto in the choir and playing in the handbell choir. She is a former member of St. Timothy Episcopal Church, both churches in Philadelphia. She also sang in the Jefferson Hospital Alumni Choir and the Abington Oratorio Choir. And, it must be said, made some of the best Christmas cookies and chocolate cake ever.
She is survived by her children – Dr. David A. husband of Tama McConnell, Reading; Jennifer L. wife of William Hudgens, Hendersonville, NC; and her grandchildren, Blair and Tate Dewalt; her sister-in-law Bernice Allen, her nephew Greg and niece Kat. She was predeceased by her brother – Jim Allen.
