Pearl E. Sweigart

Pearl E. Sweigart, 102, formerly of Shillington, passed away July 4, 2017 at 12:45 AM in the skilled care unit of Stone Ridge Poplar Run where she resided for the past 16 years. She was the wife of the late Earl A. Sweigart who passed away January 13, 2004. Born in Douglassville, she was a daughter of the late C. Arthur and Annie B. (Heilig) Koch. She was a 1923 graduate of Pottstown High School. Due to the depression, she moved to Shillington and worked at the Berkshire Knitting Mills. She joined St. Luke's Evangelical Congregational Church where she was a member for over 75 years and the oldest member. She was also a member of St. Luke's choir, a Sunday School teacher of teens for 45 years and, along with her late husband Earl, were sponsors of Teen Christian Endeavor Society, a youth training society, for 22 years. She and Earl operated Sweigart's Delicatessen at the Shillington Market and at the Bingaman Street Market for 20 years. Pearl was a trained counselor with Billy Graham Evangelism Team when in the Reading area. After retirement, she served as a volunteer Bible teacher for 10 years at the Wyomissing Nursing Rehabilitation Center. Pearl had the honor of being a member of the Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame for voting 50 years in a row in Berks County. She enjoyed gardening, wrote poetry, started oil painting after the age of 90 and sang in the Stone Ridge Chorus. She and her late husband Earl spent many years traveling the world. Surviving are her children - John husband of Peggy Sweigart, Reading, Marjorie Ann wife of the Rev. Glenn A. Miller, Gap, PA and Doris wife of Trent Stehr, Bethlehem. There are also 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Pearl was ‘Praising the Lord, Always.\" A Celebration of Pearl's life will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 2:30 PM in Klee Funeral Home Cremation Services, Inc., One East Lancaster Ave., Shillington with Chaplain Dana Logan officiating. Interment will be in Wyomissing Cemetery, Gouglersville. Friends may call on Saturday from 1:00 - 2:30 PM at the funeral home.
