Robert Mertz Obituary

Robert D. Mertz, 89, of Flying Hills, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025, in the Reading Hospital surrounded by his loving family.  Born in Easton, PA, he was a son of the late Carl. A. and Elsie M. (Schiffner) Mertz.  He was married for 67 years to his high school sweetheart, Barbara A. (Young) Mertz.  Bob and Barb were part of the original homeowners in the Flying Hills development over 50 years ago.

A graduate of Wilson Area High School in Easton, Bob immediately enlisted in the Navy out of high school and proudly served our country during the Korean Conflict, where he was awarded several medals and citations, including the Good Conduct Medal.  Following his discharge, he attended Penn State University’s Lehigh Campus, where he earned his associates degree.  A passionate learner, he also attended Lafayette University, completing several courses.

He worked as a Production Supervisor at Bell Laboratories and its subsequent companies, retiring after over 30 years of service.  Bob was an extremely intelligent, voracious reader, and also loved working with his hands, including intricate wood working and tinkering with his cars, often while listening to all kinds of music, from classic rock to smooth, easy listening tunes.  He and Barb also enjoyed dining at the YR Club in Wyomissing, and their many dogs and cats, including their dog, Betty, and their cat, Charlie.

One of Bob’s greatest joys and proudest accomplishments was becoming a father.  He and Barb opened their home and their hearts to two children, James K. and Andrea E., whom they adopted and loved as their very own.  Bob believed that family is not defined by blood alone, but by unconditional love, loyalty and the everyday moments of showing up for one another.  He created a home where his children always knew they belonged.  That legacy will live on forever in those he loved.

In addition to Barb, Bob is survived by their daughter Andrea E. (Ande) Mertz, Flying Hills, and son James K. (Jim) Mertz, companion of Karen Tripp, Sinking Spring, along with a grandson, James K. (Jimmy) Mertz, Jr., Jimmy’s wife Rebekah Smith, and great granddaughter, Marilyn Nova Mertz.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard Mertz.

Services for Bob will be private at the convenience of his family.  Donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County at www.berksarl.org.  Klee Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Shillington, is honored to be assisting the Mertz family.  www.kleefuneralhome.com
