Robert L. Shuman, 85, of Shillington, formerly of Womelsdorf, passed away December 1, 2017 in the Laurel Center, Tilden Township, where he was a guest since August 5th. Born in Chambersburg, PA, he was a son of the late Daniel Leslie and Alice (Ott) Shuman. He graduated from Chambersburg High School, Shippensburg State Teachers College with majors in English and Social Studies. He also earned an M. Ed. from Pennsylvania State University with a major in Counseling in Education. He also took additional course work from the University of Maryland, Boston University (on a General Electric fellowship) and Kutztown University. He later attended the Lay School of Theology at Gettysburg Evangelical Seminary. Following graduation, he worked as a general reporter and assistant sports editor for the Chambersburg Public Opinion. He began his teaching career at James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg, teaching English and History and serving as a guidance counselor. Later, he worked as a guidance counselor at Conrad Weiser High School in Robesonia. He became Dean of Student Affairs at Penn State - Berks Campus in 1966, retiring in 1985. He was a Life member of the Berks Counselors Association. Later, he became licensed in Life, Health and Accident Insurance and mutual fund sales, working at Weaver Financial in Ephrata. From 1956-58 he served in the U S Army Security Agency in the U.S. and Germany. He also served on the Board of Directors of Berks County Senior Citizens Council (now Encore). He served as secretary and chairman of the Womelsdorf Borough Planning Commission. He enjoyed gardening, tennis and Civil War studies. He was a charter member of the First Defenders Civil War Roundtable. He was a member of Bern Evangelical Lutheran Church, Leesport. Surviving is his wife Pauline (Phillips) Shuman, his son - Daniel Leigh Shuman husband of Karen (Troutman) of Jonestown, his daughter - Celia Diane Shuman, San Francisco, CA, his granddaughters - Heather R. wife of David Baum of Robesonia, Jessica A. wife of James Keller of Myerstown, Ashley J. wife of Chris Rizzuto of Renton, WA, Morgan L. wife of Yassine Annab of Houston, TX and his Great grandchildren - Jacob & Cecelia Baum and Lindsay Ann Keller. He was predeceased by his infant brother William. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Bern Evangelical Lutheran Church, 820 West Leesport Rd., Leesport, PA 1953. Rev. Phyllis Wolkenhauer will officiate. Viewing on Tuesday from 10-11 AM at the church. Interment in Womelsdorf Union Cemetery, Womelsdorf, of Wednesday December 6, 2017 at 1:30 PM.
