Ruth Smith Obituary

Ruth (Stratton) Smith, 89, of The Heritage of Green Hills and formerly of Wyomissing, passed away surrounded by her family on December 10, 2023.  She was the loving wife of the late Willard Franklin Smith who passed away January 17, 2023. They shared 63 years of marriage together.

Born in Paterson, NJ, Ruth was the youngest daughter of the late Albert C. and Mildred A. (Young) Stratton.  Her family was incredibly important to her, and she shared a loving relationship with her 3 late siblings:  Jean Stratton Weeks (Bart), Charles Stratton (Jean), and Margaret (Peggy) Stratton Barrie (Fred) and their families.  Ruth was a graduate of Ridgewood High School and studied theology at Wooster College before changing her course of study to nursing, graduating from the Columbia University School of Nursing.

Ruth cared deeply about people, and this shone brightly throughout her career as a Registered Nurse.  She worked at the Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge, NJ, as well as with the Montclair Visiting Nurses, and was particularly proud of her work as an obstetric nurse.  She and Will also served as volunteer EMTs with the Cedar Grove Ambulance Unit, and she served more than 2,000 volunteer hours with the Reading Hospital.

Ruth had a gift for finding friends wherever she went, and she made sure everyone in her life knew how special they were.  She and Will were both founding members of the United Presbyterian Church of Cedar Grove, NJ, as well as members of Immanuel UCC where they served as a part of the Diversity Committee, work particularly important to Ruth.  She was a proud member of P.E.O International and, with Will, was a member of the Blue Marsh Sailing Association. She loved to host dinner parties throughout her life, and she was grateful for her community at The Heritage during her later years where she particularly enjoyed her book club and bridge club.

Ruth brought beauty to the world through her music and her many hobbies and crafts.  She was a skilled pianist, a member of all her church choirs, and a member of the Reading Choral Society.  She poured her love and creative energy into gardening, floral arranging, sewing, cross-stitch, knitting, crocheting, and painting – just to name a few of her creative pursuits.  More often than not, these projects were loving gifts for her family and friends. Ruth also appreciated the beauty of the world through extensive travel, both across the United States and abroad.

Family was the joy of Ruth’s life, and she will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, and extended family.  She is survived by her daughters, Susan S. Shanaman (Mark) of West Lawn and Gretchen S. Keenan (Donald) of Mohnton, her four grandchildren – Matthew Shanaman (Megan), Elizabeth Shanaman Baldwin (David), Margaret Keenan Hasani (Tamim), and Rebecca Keenan Stephens (Dylan) – and her great-grandchildren Emily and Luke Shanaman.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Immanuel UCC, 99 S. Waverly Street, Shillington, PA 19607. Rev. Megan Huesgen will officiate.
