William H. Sassaman, Sr.

William H. Sassaman, Sr., 82, formerly of Euclid Ave., Temple, passed away March 14, 2018 at 6:57 PM in Berks Heim, where he had been a guest for the past 1 years. He was the husband of the late Shirley A. (Hein) Sassaman who passed away October 31, 2010. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary prior to her passing. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late J. Russell Sassaman, Sr. and Ruth M. (Wunsch) Sassaman. He owned and operated Sassaman & Burdan Auto Service, Temple from 1960 - 1990 and continued working part time for his son Dyke, the current owner, until his retirement. He was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, Chandler Lodge No. # 227 F & AM, Reading Consistory and Rajah Shrine. At Rajah, Bill played lead banjo with the String Band and Concert Band for many years. He also played banjo with Pretzel City Dixieland Jazz Band and his own band - the String Crew. He raced flathead stock cars at the Reading Fairgrounds in the 1950's and was an avid fisherman, camper and boater in North East, MD in the 1970's & 80's. He served as past president of Automotive Service Council of PA and Independent Garagemen's Association of Berks County. He is survived by his sons - Dyke W. husband of Gail Sassaman, Blandon, William H. Jr. husband of Jennifer Sassaman, Lancaster, his grandchildren - Dyke W. Jr. husband of Abbey Sassaman, Wyomissing, Kelli Jo wife of Brad Rosenberger, Mt. Penn, Bret W., Leah K., Drew D., Anna R. Sassaman, all of Lancaster, and his great grandchildren - Karryn E. Rosenberger, Jeremy M. Sassaman, Kayci Jo E. Rosenberger, Andrew W. Sassaman. He is also survived by his siblings - Kenneth A. \"Buzz\" Sassaman, David C. Sassaman, both of Shillington and Ruth Ann wife of Marvin Eyrich, Parkside, Chester County. In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by his siblings - Jane L. Walker (2014), John R. Sassaman (1994) and Donald R. Sassaman (1977). Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Klee Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., One East Lancaster Ave., Shillington. Masonic service conducted by Chandler Lodge No. 227, F & AM at 7:00 PM. Relative and friends may also call on Monday, March 19, 2018 from 9:00-10:00 AM followed by his funeral service at 10:00 AM with Dr. Harry Serio officiating.
