Robert Leon Suklje, 89, of Shillington, passed away December 23, 2020 in the Reading Hospital. The son of immigrants from Yugoslavia, the late John and Mary (Krize) Suklje, he was the loving husband of the late Linda Elizabeth Suklji, who passed away in 2018.
Bob – “Bob Bob” to his treasured step-grandchildren – was born in Reading on Oct. 13, 1931. He graduated from Reading High School before serving in the army. He graduated with honors from ordinance supply school and was sent to Austria during the Korean War.
He would later earn an associate degree from Pierce College in Philadelphia and pursued a long career in banking. He began as a teller before becoming head teller and then a branch manager for the former Reading Trust Co. Bob spent 18 years as an Audit Officer at Meridian Bank then, beginning in 1991, served as an audit officer at First National Bank of Fredericksburg until his full retirement.
Often at Linda’s side as an engaged member of the Shillington community, Bob was a member of the Friends of the Mifflin Community Library, Berks County Young Republican Club, Governor Mifflin Booster’s Club, the Monarch Club of Reading, and the Clover Park Athletic Association. He was a talented woodworker who loved creating beautiful and practical items in his workshop. He also enjoyed attending the Reading Symphony and musical theater productions, dining out at local restaurants, and watching sports, particularly Philadelphia teams as well as Duke and Notre Dame. Bob could regularly be found keeping his own box scores at Governor Mifflin sporting events and rarely missed games and performances by his grandkids.
As caring as he was quiet, Bob was devoted to his extended family and was happiest when spending time with them, whether hosting Memorial Day picnics in his Shillington back yard, watching a game, or vacationing at the Jersey shore.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Suklje, Jr. and sisters Catherine Springer, Anna Cowdrick, and Margarite Yaklich. He also adored his dear nieces and nephews.
Bob is survived by his sisters Frances Cantrelle and Louise Graybill; his stepson, Eric B. (Barbara) Snyder, Harrisburg, and stepdaughter Marcy E. (Christopher) Golden, Shillington; and step-grandchildren Alyssa B. (Michael) Fritz, Harrisburg; Benjamin E. (Julie) Snyder, Jefferson, MD, Corbin P. Snyder, Harrisburg, Ian J. (Jillian) Golden, Philadelphia; Rory C, Golden, Mechanicsburg, and Vaughn E. Golden, Potsdam, NY. Bob also was blessed to be the great step-grandfather of Arlo L. and Lucy R. Fritz and Francis Jane Snyder.
