Ruth E. Eshelman, 100, passed away March 16, 2021 at Columbia Cottage of Wyomissing. Born in Providence, RI, she was a daughter of the late Leonard A. and Emily A. (Cole) McComsey.

Ruth married the love of her life, Wilbur J. Eshelman in 1943 and together they raised four wonderful children and celebrated 76 amazing years of marriage before his passing on August 9, 2019. They lived together for 70 years in a house they built in Montrose Manor.

Ruth was a 1938 graduate of Shillington High School. She served as treasurer for the first Shillington HS yearbook, “The Shilcord”, and actively participated in planning class reunions. In 1942, Ruth graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Reading Hospital School of Nursing and is a Life Member of the RHSN Alumnae Association. She worked as a private duty nurse and during WWII she worked in the dispensary at American Chain & Cable, Reading. She proudly proclaimed her RN identity throughout her life.

Once she became a mother, Ruth lovingly devoted her life to her family. Their health and well-being always first priority, Ruth’s skills as a cook produced healthy meals and as a nurse provided comfort and appropriate treatment when family members were sick or injured. Ruth served as Treasurer for the Farview Elementary School PTA and was an active member of Grace Ev. Lutheran Church. Later she helped care for her mother, volunteered at the Lutheran Home at Topton, and delivered Meals on Wheels.

Ruth was a warm, lovely person who most enjoyed the company of family and close friends, many from HS and nursing school. But her true pleasure in life was time spent with her family. She loved sharing meals and special occasions, traveling with husband and children throughout the US, especially to National Parks, vacationing at the shore, and visiting grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed the outdoors and gardening, raising flowers and vegetables, always marveling at nature’s diversity.

She is survived by her children – Gail A. wife of J. Gregory Colahan, Cumru Twp., Neil A. husband of Kathy (Means) Eshelman, Montoursville, J. Scott Eshelman, Mohnton, Gary L. Eshelman, Sinking Spring, her grandchildren – Sean husband of Elizabeth Colahan, Seth Eshelman, Ian husband of Erin Colahan and her great grandchildren – Riley, Makenzy, Catherine and Tanner. In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by her brothers – Leonard & Charles McComsey.

It is very difficult when you lose your mother. Marlene and I both wish you strength and confidence that your mother knew she was loved and cherished the memories she had of you and the rest of the family. Rick & Marlene Wilson

Condolences from her classmates of 1938. Also from the SHS reunion committee. Ruth may be the last of her class. She will certainly be missed here, but welcomed by all those who will greet her with opened arms.
