Markus E. Schneiderhan, 87, Sinking Spring, passed away on November 4, 2018 at Berks Heim, where he resided since March. Markus had a remarkable ability to leave an imprint of kindness, gentleness, and an unwavering sense of humor on each person he met, even through a number of health issues toward the end of his life. His family will always remember his exemplary character and faith as they strive to honor his legacy. He was their hero. Born in Reading, Markus was the son of the late Markus and Emma (Fassio) Schneiderhan. In addition to his parents, his brother Karl Schneiderhan, brother-in-law William Lessig, half-brothers Kenneth and William Hollenshead, and half-sister Estelle (Hollenshead) Herflicker predeceased him. Markus was a loving husband to Gloria A. (Lessig) Schneiderhan for 61 wonderful years and modeled a commitment to marriage and family for their three children they raised together: Kurt W., husband of Carolann, Kristen B., wife of Steven T. Wright, and Mark E., husband of Cynthia.  His seven grandchildren – Laura Hill (Greg), Eric Schneiderhan (Meryn), Amy Schneiderhan, Markus Schneiderhan (Samantha), Julie Schneiderhan, Benjamin Wright, and Thomas Wright – adored and looked up to him.  Finally, Markus was “Great Poppy” to three great-grandchildren; Jack and Charlotte Hill and Jonah Schneiderhan.  Four-year-old Jack remembers Poppy as someone “never yelled”.  In addition to his loving family, Markus is survived by two dear sisters-in-law, Kaye Lessig (Naples, FL) and Marjorie Schneiderhan (Shillington).  He is also survived by six nieces and two nephews. Markus was a 1948 graduate of Wilson High School.  He graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 1953 with a Bachelor’s degree in music education and received his Master’s degree in music education from Penn State University.  A lover of music, Markus shared that love with others by teaching music at every level in the Cocalico School District throughout his 39-year career, which began in a one-room schoolhouse.  He played the clarinet and enjoyed teaching private lessons.  He spent many years as the music director and later program director for Rotary’s Camp Neidig.  Early in his career, he played with and directed the Centerport Band and directed the choir at Bausman Memorial, UCC.  In his retirement, he was a member and conductor of the Berks County Senior Citizens Orchestra.  Mark was a member of the 553 Air Force Band of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and was active in his church Grace Evangelical Lutheran in Shillington.  He was also a former member of the West Lawn Owls Club and the West Lawn Lions Club. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Tammy Seda of Elder’s Helper, LLC as well as the amazing A1 staff at Berks Heim for Markus’ fantastic end-of-life care. A memorial service celebrating Markus’ life will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 30 Liberty Street, Shillington. Friends and relatives may call at the church from10:00 AM until service time.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 237 Court Street, Reading, PA 19601. God speed, Maestro, on your journey to eternal peace with the Lord, where you will add your wonderful musical talent to the great Celestial Orchestra. My heartfelt sympathy to Gloria and your family. Mark will live on in your hearts through fond memories of him. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."
