Peter “Pete” Schiffman, 84, of Reading, PA passed away after a short illness on February 28, 2018. Peter was born on January 5, 1934 in Passaic, NJ to Max P. and Ida Schiffman nee Rosenberg. He graduated from Passaic High School in 1951 and graduated with a B.S. in Engineering from Fairleigh Dickenson University in 1955.
Peter lived with his wife Helaine and their 3 children, Jeffrey, Janet, and Jill in Clifton, New Jersey for 29 years before relocating to Flying Hills/Reading in 1985 to continue working for Hertz/Penske Corporation. Peter was the Manager of Truck Purchasing at the Penske Corporation in Green Hills and previously worked at the Hertz Corporation in New York, NY and Hertz Penske Corporation in Parsippany, NJ. He retired 15 years ago.
Peter’s knowledge of trucks and truck specifications was encyclopedic. It is fair to say up until his retirement that Pete purchased most Penske trucks you passed on the road, and it is also fair to say he could tell you where and when it was built and many other details about it.
Peter was a lover of all things moving and flying- boats, trucks, cars, trains, birds and planes. He loved fishing and being on the water and had wonderful memories of his teenage years spent on tug boats his father was involved with through his many years working at Reinauer Brothers Inc. and Reinauer Transportation Company, which were wholesale and retail petroleum products businesses. He loved animals, nature, reading about history, and had a keen interest in weather and meteorology. On any given day, Pete could provide the official forecast in various cities of interest and the dew point if asked.
Peter and wife Helaine enjoyed spending their winters in Hilton Head, SC since his retirement until 2017.
Peter was predeceased by Helaine, his wife of 61 years, and his daughter Janet McGlamory of Riverview, FL, and his sister Eleanor “Ellie” Simon.
He is survived by his son Jeffrey and his wife Lynne, son in law Richard McGlamory, and daughter Jill and her partner James Scutt. Also, grandchildren Benjamin and wife Marielle, Samuel, Michele and fiancée Robert Brunjes, and Dianna and husband Mat Rhoades. Also, great-granddaughter Sara Rose, and his eldest sister Paula Schletter and her husband Marty. Also, nieces and nephews and their spouses, and his longtime Penske work associate and friend, Julie Tryon.
